A senior Russian general has been declared dead following an explosion in Moscow, according to an investigative body.

The incident happened on Monday morning when an bomb planted beneath a vehicle detonated, resulting in the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.

Sarvarov was the head of the armed forces' department for training operations.

The committee stated that one line of inquiry suggests the alleged involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. So far, Ukraine has not issued a comment.

Site of the Incident

Teams have been sent to the scene, which is reportedly in a southern district of the capital.

Media coverage indicate the explosion took place in a vehicle lot close to a residential building.

History of Incidents

Since the beginning of the extensive conflict in Ukraine, a string of Russian military commanders have been attacked within Moscow.

This latest event comes after other serious incidents, for instance:

  • General Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in a car bomb attack in Moscow earlier this year.
  • General Igor Kirillov died in late 2024 when a explosive hidden on a scooter was detonated remotely.

While a source from Ukraine in the past connected Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such claims are not formally acknowledged as a matter of policy.

The war has been marked by covert operations extending into the center of the Russian capital.

The examination into General Sarvarov's death is still underway.
