Around 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Vehicles, building surfaces and mailboxes were marked, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they reported in a release.
Police say they were contacted late on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish fluid.
The fluid had been placed in the pattern of a swastika, they stated.
Police then discovered multiple other marked automobiles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
These symbols are banned in Germany under legislation outlawing the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police say initial examinations show the liquid was most likely human blood.
"At present there remains no lead as to its source; investigators are presently not informed of any harm in association with the incident," they stated.
Local authorities stated they were attempting "to solve the incident" and have appealed to the public for information.
A high-ranking representative stated the vandalism made him speechless and had to be solved promptly.
"This incident affects the core of Hanau and reopens the pain of the far-right terrorist attack half a decade ago," he stated on online, mentioning the killing of nine individuals by a assailant aiming at residents of foreign heritage in five years prior.
