Ceramic Gift, Anyone? Italy's PM to Auction Off World Leaders' Gifts for Good Cause

Passing on unwanted gifts could be viewed as a little discourteous – except if it's done in the proper manner.

A Charitable Auction

The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, is set to sell around 270 presents received by her by foreign dignitaries on official trips. The eclectic collection reportedly features gifts including a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gilded heels.

The presents, collectively, are valued at around €800,000. They will be put up for sale in a public auction by a Italian auction firm. A date is yet to be set, but the intention is to hold the auction before Christmas, with the revenue benefiting various charities.

Palazzo Chigi Treasures

The presents reportedly kept in a storage room on the upper level of the government headquarters. Reports indicate that Meloni furthermore planning to auction off gifts received by her predecessors that have been gathering dust over a long period.

A complete inventory remains disclosed, but a glimpse were revealed earlier this year when an 11-page list of official presents was reviewed by officials. The discussion centered on whether a statutory cap on gift value was being honored. According to regulation, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents worth more than €300.

An International Assortment of Gifts

The collection includes:

  • A scarf from the Albanian prime minister, reportedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A customary Indian garment from the Indian leader.
  • A case of jewelry from the Slovakian president.
  • A porcelain tea set and a selection of wines from Hungary's leader.
  • A pottery dish from the ex-American leader.
  • A electronic pad from the leader of Ukraine.
  • Watercolour paintings from the Moldovan government.
  • An assortment including cosmetics, a skateboard, and numerous carpets received during trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Maybe the oddest gifts included the statuette from Milei and the exotic footwear," one might note.

Political Backdrop

The prime minister has received praise, particularly from within her party, with garnering support from global statesmen and positioning Italy as a prominent force on the world stage once again.

This charitable initiative highlights a novel approach to deal with the protocol gifts that are collected during a political career.
