Our team is analyzing images and video circulated earlier today that depict the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials say fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed to his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to verify the site from which the pictures were from was based on social media reports saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
We used panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to match the unique yellow colour of a nearby residential complex captured in the footage.
Locating additional structures, streetlights and the road configuration verified the exact location the footage were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were recent and that the visuals had not undergone digital alteration.
