At least 16 people were killed and over 40 were hurt when gunmen fired on a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police have labeled a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities is 16, which includes one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were admitted to the hospital.

The deceased are yet to be officially identified, but investigators think their ages span between 10 and 87 years of age.

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Known as a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the moments before the shooting, saying they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister expressed that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the statement read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was a fatality in the incident, as per reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with several in a critical state. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He told reporters he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
