McLaren Racing Points Finger at Rival Drivers for Piastri-Norris Collision

Tire detaches from McLaren after impact between Piastri and Norris

A wheel comes loose from the car of Norris after he crashed into team-mate Oscar Piastri at the start of the United States Grand Prix sprint race.

McLaren F1 team leaders Brown and Andrea Stella pointed to competitors for the crash between Oscar Piastri and Norris at the start of the United States Grand Prix sprint event.

Piastri, ahead of his teammate in the championship by twenty-two points, crashed into his fellow McLaren driver after colliding with the Nico Hulkenberg.

The crash took both team drivers from the race, along with Aston Martin's Alonso, who was on the inside of Hulkenberg.

Team Executives Voice Frustration Over Incident

Zak Brown, the team's CEO, commented to broadcasters that some of the racing at the start was "unprofessional", remarking: "Clearly Hulkenberg made contact with Piastri and he had no business being where he was."

McLaren F1 team principal Stella added: "Our feeling is that we are disappointed that we were denied the possibility to compete."

"It's surprising that some racers with a lot of experience fail to act with justful prudence. Go to the initial turn, make sure you avoid harming competitors and continue."

McLaren indicated that the team principal was referring to both the Sauber driver and Alonso.

Differing Perspectives on the Crash

Nevertheless, former champion Hill, commentating for BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra, said he thought Piastri had not demonstrated enough understanding of the risks of the opening turn of an Formula 1 event when he decided to cut back to try to pass his teammate.

Piastri had a stronger launch than the Briton and initially competed on the outer side on the uphill entry to the turn.

But he then cut back in an attempt to get a run on Norris on the exit, only to make contact with the Sauber driver.

Racer Comments After the Incident

Piastri said: "Not ideal but I did not see what occurred, I tried to cut back on Norris and we were both quite distant from the apex and then got a hit and it sent me into Lando. Unfortunate."

Norris commented: "I just was struck, right? I did nothing wrong. Further back events unfolded and I just got unlucky and was struck because of it. I don't know. I need to look a bit more thoroughly. It's more people behind just being a bit careless and we are the consequence of that."

The Aston Martin driver said: "At one point I thought I was in the correct position on the inside, but some cars came very quickly from the outside switching back and then I was there in the center."

Hulkenberg, who had qualified a season-best fourth place, said: "Big frustrations. All the strong performance from the previous day in the bin. Just messy."

"Piastri turned in pretty aggressively trying to get the undercut and exit of the first corner but I can't just disappear."

"I had Alonso challenge on the inside and I couldn't see him any more. I wanted to provide room for him and then Piastri steered inward and the collision was inevitable."

Aftermath and Team Response

McLaren will analyze the incident with their drivers but only after the race weekend. Both vehicles needed significant repairs before grand prix qualifying at 22:00 BST on the weekend.

The team principal said: "Overall disappointed but we accept it, we are now concentrating on fixing the cars, there is a lot to do and then we will restart the event from there."

"We are in a competitive place from our performance point of view so I trust we have the opportunity to race, compete fairly and utilize our capabilities."

"The points are the key thing, I prefer not to talk about mal-intent, just prudence. A little more prudence would be good for all involved."

Standings Impact

The sprint event was taken by Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who gained ground on both McLaren drivers in the standings - he is now fifty-five points behind the Australian and 33 behind of Norris.

The team boss said: "The consequence is what the maths show - we lost eight championship points with both racers, but we concentrate on ourselves. We have a highly capable car and two strong drivers. We look forward to just some standard competition."

Verstappen said he was approaching the title race race by race.
