Paceman Atkinson Compounds England's Fitness Problems.

'Serious blow' for the English camp as Atkinson leaves the field with a hamstring injury.

Gus Atkinson added to the fitness woes of the England squad when he left the playing area during Saturday's play of the Boxing Day Test versus the Australians.

The pace bowler felt a problem in his left hamstring after the final ball in his spell on Saturday.

The England team reported Atkinson felt some "soreness" and would spend time away from the action in order to be assessed "during the day".

The series decider of the series in Sydney starts on Sunday, 4 January.

The visitors have previously lost fast bowlers one seamer to a knee injury and another paceman because of a side injury on the current trip.

Matthew Fisher was brought into the squad as cover for Wood.

The seamer had a tough time in the opening two Tests, claiming a mere three wickets.

He was left out from the previous Test, then recalled for the Boxing Day match as Archer's replacement.

Atkinson showed better form in Melbourne, bagging two scalps during the host's first knock, and scoring 28 runs as a batsman being one of only three English batsmen who passed ten runs.

After bowling one over in Australia's second innings, he resumed the next day and had nightwatchman Scott Boland caught behind.

Yet, on the final ball of his spell, he delivered a slower ball to Travis Head and suddenly grabbed his left hamstring.

Gus Atkinson was recalled for the Melbourne match following his omission of the third.
