Space Traveler Discloses Emotional Distress Following Wave of Online Abuse After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after enduring a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also carried well-known figures.

The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, referring to a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the period after the landing.

She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she confessed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has focused her career on gynecological science and conducted tests during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her studies and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was drowned out under the deluge of gendered attacks.

She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of sexual assault survivors.

Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Months following reaching space, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the well-wishers whose support helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she said.

She added that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had resulted from the mission, including increased focus on her women's health research and platforms for her activism.

Flight Details

The self-operating spacecraft departed its launch site in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the edge of outer space.

The diverse crew also comprised experts in various fields.

The venture behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
