The network's Leading New Show of This Year Secures a Significant Renewal for Two More Seasons.
During the fall season, Adult Swim saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the channel launched a completely new animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. At a time often defined by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Significant Investment
On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the world of the Campbell family. The series follows three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."
Network Praise
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and championed its distinctly quirky sensibility.
"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about observing this charming family navigate their daily lives.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running cynical streak. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
The Path Forward
Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to enjoy the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
