The retail giant Implements Purchase Limits on Pokémon Trading Cards

In a significant move, Walmart has started enforcing purchase restrictions on how many Pokémon trading card products customers can acquire during a single visit. This new rule was activated starting November 5th, based on a company memo distributed to employees.

Tackling Reseller Problems

Although not formally announced by Walmart, numerous sources suggest this decision was influenced by a viral TikTok video that depicted a customer buying an enormous quantity of Pokémon card items at a checkout counter. The employee featured in the video faced widespread backlash for allowing the large-scale transaction to go through.

Rule Specifics and Possible Weaknesses

The updated guideline specifies that shoppers may only buy up to five trading card packs or boxes each time they enter. Yet, the wording has sparked debate due to its lack of clarity. Precisely what qualifies as a "box" is not defined, and if someone could still purchase five premium Elite Trainer Boxes is uncertain.

Additionally, because the restriction is tied to individual trips, theoretically an eager reseller could make multiple trips—purchasing the maximum each time—to gather significant stocks throughout the day.

The Reseller Crisis

To most players, such efforts might seem excessive, but for scalpers, it's standard practice. In recent years, speculators have significantly added to frequent stockouts of Pokémon cards, driven by the TCG's growing fame.

Some resellers aim to sell unopened products at a markup, whereas some hunt for rare cards that can command extraordinary prices. For instance, a specific Mega Evolution card in recent releases is currently selling for over $800 on various platforms.

Upcoming Releases

This policy change coincides with the imminent release of the Phantasmal Flames set, scheduled for November 14th. Early listings already show chase cards like the Charizard mega evolution listed for nearly $1,500, highlighting the persistent interest and potential reseller attention.

With any luck, Walmart's restrictions will curb bulk purchases and improve availability for genuine collectors and casual players alike.
